William Patrick Owen at UPSURGE O2 Academy 2 Islington
Alt folk singer-songwriter William Patrick Owen plays his first solo gig this Thursday at upsurge; toasting 40 years of music at the O2 Academy Islington
From its raucous beginnings as the notoriously iconic, yet short-lived Marquee N1 to the wealth of talented musicians who have graced the stage today; the past 4 decades of live gigs at the O2 Academy Islington have been eventful to say the least. Playing host to the likes of The Damned, Funeral for a Friend, VAMPS, My Chemical Romance, Bloc Party, and Tokio Hotel among others. Now to toast the big “4-0” O2 Academy and Jar Music Live have teamed up to create UpSurge. A night marking not only the venue’s history but also celebrating and presenting the hot young north London talent that will head up the next 4 decades.
William Patrick Owen is up this Thursday alongside a few other acoustic acts. Playing the first gig of his new solo project, William Patrick Owen is a beautifully eloquent rising star you’ll want to catch before he’s out of reach.
Tender and intimate, his music brings together melancholic lyrics and intricate guitar playing reminiscent of 60s/70s singers like Nick Drake, Jackson C Frank and Bert Jansch. Playing a selection of recently written music, including two lullabies for his nephew and brand new release ‘Lilac Thunder’ – a song he describes as capturing a vibrant sense of young, queer and urban love all within a scene of blurry hangover haze… I think we can all relate.
