80’S NEW ROMANTIC’S VISAGE RELEASE THEIR FIFTH AND FINAL ALBUM ‘DEMONS TO DIAMONDS’ FEATURING THE LAST SONGS OF THE LEGENDARY STEVE STRANGE
You most likely know the name Visage, from their 1980’s mega hit ‘Fade to Grey’. The song which skyrocketed the group to immediate cult status. A song so monumental in it’s chart positioning and critical acclaim that reworked and remastered versions (even including one performed by a symphony orchestra) appeared on nearly all album’s the group has ever put out. You may also know the name Visage for it’s frontman. The highly iconic, bold and theatrical master of the Blitz, counter culture superstar Mr.Steve Strange.
An endless creative talent (and like many of the greatest) sadly gone too soon; Steve Strange will not easily, if ever be forgotten. Whilst half of ‘Demons to Diamonds’ had been recorded before Steve’s unexpected death, Visage decided that rather than leave the album unfinished they would persevere and complete the album. Featuring contributions by Simple Minds’ Mick MacNeil, and cover artwork by longtime friend Boy George ‘Demons to Diamonds’ is a magnificent dedication to Steve Strange and arguably some of the bands finest work.
A total of 10 tracks feature on the album. Many of which encapsulate the delicacies of Strange’s talent. Uncomplicated and slick, his voice echoes out over expert arrangements that don’t try to hard and deeply poetic lyrics. Showing just how much Strange and the band themselves still had to give.
Opening track ‘Before You Win’ is big, and feels like the title track if there was one. Full of 80’s synth heavy chords, and best played LOUD. (Listen Here: https://soundcloud.com/the-real-visage/sets/demons-to-diamonds-clips ) Followed up next is Visage’s take and cover of David Bowie’s tune ‘Loving the Alien’ which is nearly unrecognisable until the chorus.
Strange’s ‘Seven Deadly Sins Part 3’ completes his trilogy of Deadly Sins part one and two, taking place in a bold and anarchic centre of the CD. With Steve whispering in a viper like tongue.. (you guessed it) the ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ . All a bit like the soundtrack for a darker “The Last Unicorn” or “NeverEnding Story” but nonetheless very Visage and very Steve (Listen Here: https://soundcloud.com/the-real-visage/sets/demons-to-diamonds-clips )
The absolute favourite stand out track comes from the smooth saxy wonder that is ‘Aurora’. A bit Bjork, it’s a haunting little melancholy beauty that lingers long afterwards (Listen Here: https://soundcloud.com/the-real-visage/sets/demons-to-diamonds-clips) the on to disco tune ‘Skin is my Sin’ which also features some serious sax, alongside smooth arrangements that make the song both nostalgic sounding and future forward (Listen Here: https://soundcloud.com/the-real-visage/sets/demons-to-diamonds-clips)
Clearly chosen to close the album, final song ‘Never’ takes listeners out in a celebration of Steve’s life. A bit Mercury, and of course entirely Visage. ‘Never’ is beautifully written, with an uplifting melody yet impossibly heartbreaking. Steve sings out “Never stop breathing, never stop fighting or dreaming; live out your wonderful life. Never stop driving to go the way you feel: you’re behind the wheel of your life.” (Listen Here: https://soundcloud.com/the-real-visage/10-never-clip?in=the-real-visage/sets/demons-to-diamonds-clips)
